Rita Meets…William Yeoward

William Yeoward is an absolute mainstay of the interior design world. From his first shop on The Kings Road where he mostly sold antiques, to his current empire which spans furniture, lighting, rugs, crystal and more, William has become synonymous with a kind of sophisticated British style. And there’s still a shop on The Kings Road – only now its 3,000 square foot. I caught up with him to find out a little bit more about the man and the brand.

What was the inspiration for starting William Yeoward?
A fascination in product for the home. I kept finding clever people making extraordinary things but not necessarily useful. I thought with a practical tweak these extra skills could be channeled to relevant product for the home today. It is very important to work out what you are about and how you want to live before you even contemplate a house or the things you need to live in it comfortably… I find comfort to be the key to contentment and therefore I wanted to design in a way that is practical, elegant but above all comfortable.

Tell us a bit about the company?
We’re based on the Kings Road and have been since 1985. In the beginning we showcased mainly antiques, objet and pieces that I had designed and commissioned for my numerous design projects… The store flourished while I added more designs of furniture, lightning, dinner services and crystal.

If you had to sum up William Yeoward, the brand, in three words, what would they be?
Exclusive. Entertaining. Handsome.

When it comes to the creative process what inspires you?
I’ve always felt if you have one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow, you will find what is right for today.
